Cause-and-effect essay or Problem-solution essay?Problem/Solution essays serve a purpose of informing the audience about problems and offer a set of solutions/actions aimed to deal with these problems. Sometimes, problem/solutions essays are also referred to as Proposal Essays. People of different occupations write proposals every day in such areas as business, education, entertainment, etc. It can be said that most of the activities in the world revolve around different proposals that suggest solutions to existing problems, difficulties and inconveniencies.
Problem-solution essays have something in common with cause and effect essays, as both types of the essays dip into analysis of the subject; however, the cause and effect essays are limited to mere describing causes and effect of the events, while problem solutions essays present a stand (a solution) to the issue at hand. The similarity lies in the fact that both types of essays attempt to investigate and analyze the subject to reveal all the intricacies and relationships that may be important and relevant to the subject.
Cause and effect essays attempt to unveil the mechanism of interdependence between a set of events and describe all the possible implications. However, the writing of cause and effect essays assumes a neutrality of the writer, limited to a strictly analytical approach to the subject. In this case, the writer is not supposed to come up with any solutions, instead, he merely pinpoints the laws of the event mechanism pertaining to the subject.
A writer working on a problem – solution essay is supposed to go further: not only does he have to correctly identify the event mechanism pertaining to the subject, but to also define existing flaws in that mechanism and arrive at his own solution aimed at correcting those flaws. Not only this, the writer has to convince the reader that his solution to the problem is correct, because, eventually, the solution will have to be either rejected or accepted by the audience.
Since the writer is directly interested in the audience’s approval of his solution, he has to study carefully the attitudes and the background of his audience, as well as its expectations. Sometimes, the proposed solution is arrived at via logical reasoning; however, the problems related to politics or social life may bring even more complexity. In this case, the acceptance or rejection of the solution by the audience might have an emotion underpinning which should be also taken into account by the writer as he works on his solution to the problem. To conclude, it should be noted that both cause and effect essays and problem/solution essays are extremely handy in developing a fuller conceptual picture of any subject or issue that might be interesting and enlightening to a writer and his audience.
